Man’s Best Friend

Your basket tucked up
In the corner of my room.
You were a gentle little wolf
Under the light of the moon.

We walked along the beach,
For miles along the bay,
Muddy paws on the rug,
Then resting all day.

I can feel your soft ears
Silky to my touch,
Your wide pleading eyes
How I miss you so much.

Your paw in my hand
And barking at the post,
Following me around
Is what I miss the most.

The sound of your paws
Tapping tunefully in the hall.
Your tail always wagging
When you heard my voice call.

For three wonderful years
You trotted beside me,
How I wish it’d been longer
But it wasn’t meant to be.

A grief overcame me
And I fought with all might
To push down my tears
On a cold winter’s night.

You used to sleep peacefully
In my room with a sigh.
Now you’re sleeping with angels
God bless and goodbye.

But nothing is lost,
Because love means you gain.
And I am so truly thankful
For man’s ultimate best friend.
